Centre for Public Policy PROVIDUS is pleased to
invite you to an international conference

Turkish accession to the EU: On Track or Derailed?
Views from new Member States and Turkey

Riga, 23 November 2006,
Reval Hotel Latvija, Elizabetes 55, Hall BETA
14:00-17:30

One of the central questions in the debate of the future of Europe and further EU enlargement is the possible accession of Turkey. Will Turkish EU membership strengthen the EU’s role in the world? Will it provide Europe with new energy resources and market for economic growth? Is the main reason why so many EU citizens are against Turkish accession their fear for Turkish immigration flows and different traditions? What is European and what is Turkish? And, do the heated debates on Turkish EU accession reveal a general doubt on the necessity of further EU enlargement?

The goal of this conference is to enhance the discussions on possible Turkish EU accession, to analyse the debates in new EU member states as well as reactions in Turkey to the arguments raised in Europe. The conference will also provide an opportunity to discuss the latest developments in Turkish-EU relations in light of the European Commission progress report and prior to the decisions of the EU summit in December.

The conference is organized in the framework of an international project financed by the East-East: Partnership Beyond Borders Program of the Open Society Institute.
